As part of its initiative to arrange marriages for women residing at the State Home for Women in Nittur, Udupi, the State government performed the wedding of two women on Friday.
Malleshwari married Sanjay Prabhu, and Susheela entered into wedlock with Nagaraja Bala. They were the 26th and 27th weddings organised by the Department of Women and Child Welfare at the State Home for Women.
Udupi Deputy Commissioner T.K. Swaroopa performed the “kanyadana” amid wedding rituals. Meals were arranged for 300 persons.
Ms. Malleshwari, 22, hailing from Ballari district, is studying final year BA (Journalism) at a government college in Udupi. She married Mr. Prabhu, from Mulky in Dakshina Kannada, who works at a private company in Bengaluru.
The specially abled Ms. Susheela, 42, married Mr. Bala, 45, of Hassan district and who manages a canteen in Bengaluru.
The backgrounds of the grooms were checked well in advance before getting the women married to them, an official release said.
The marriages will be registered. The government will keep a fixed deposit of ₹50,000 each, as an incentive, in the name of the two women. Their marital life will be monitored for three years. The FD amount will be transferred to each of them after three years.
Pushpa Rani, Superintendent of the State Home for Women, said that as the government is arranging many marriages, many men are coming forward to marry women living in the State Home for Women.
