Groundwater in Mudhalipalayam and Nallur areas has been severely contaminated due to the dumping of unsegregated wastes in abandoned quarries by Tiruppur Corporation.

The Madras High Court has restrained the Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation from dumping unsegregated municipal waste into a temporary site at Chinnakalipalayam in Iduvai village.
Dismissing the contention of the local body that precautionary measures are taken for discarding the unsegregated wastes, Chief Justice of Madras High Court Manindra Mohan Shrivastava issued an order stating that consent was given to the local body only to dump segregated wastes.
The Tiruppur Corporation finds itself in a tight spot as the residents of Mudhalipalayam where the local body plans to establish a permanent dumping site on a little over 17 acres are putting up stiff resistance.
Scores of farmers and residents of Mudhalipalayam and Nallur took part in the monthly farmers’ grievances redress meeting on Saturday in black attire, as a mark of protest, to highlight the destruction caused by the “severe pollution” to their livelihood.
The administration has not stepped in despite laboratory tests carried out by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board indicated presence of TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) to whopping extent of 1.2 lakh mg per litre of leachate water in the dumping site. This despite the Madras High Court issuing specific guidelines on disposal of wastes in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, said P. Velusamy, the petitioner.
Mudhalipalayam and Nallur areas must be declared as areas of severe pollution, and the residents losing livelihood must be compensated adequately, he demanded. With waste accumulating on streets, the public are demanding measures to tackle the issue.
On Sunday, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) propaganda and policy general secretary K.G. Arunraj visited the polluted site at Mudhalipalayam and expressed shock over the Corporation not deriving the intended utility of the several micro compost yards.
The private contract system for garbage clearance that warrants the Corporation to shell out ₹4 per kg was a scam, he alleged.
