ICG Ship Anmol Apprehends Two Bangladeshi Fishing Boats in India’s EEZ

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Ship Anmol, while undertaking routine surveillance operations in the Northern Bay of Bengal on Tuesday (16 December, 2025), apprehended two Bangladeshi fishing boats along with 35 crew members for engaging in illegal fishing activities inside India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

ICG on Thursday (December 18, 2025) informed that the apprehension was carried out for violation of the Maritime Zones of India (MZI) (Regulation of Fishing by Foreign Vessels) Act, 1981. The presence of active fishing gear and approximately 500 kilograms of fish catch on board the boats clearly indicated that fishing operations were being conducted within Indian waters.

Following the interception, the apprehended fishing boats and their crew were taken into custody by the Indian Coast Guard and subsequently handed over to the Marine Police at Frazerganj on 17 December 2025 for further legal proceedings in accordance with applicable laws, it said.

This operation underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding India’s maritime interests, preventing illegal fishing and ensuring the safety and security of Indian fishermen operating in the region. The ICG has maintained heightened vigilance in the Bay of Bengal to deter unlawful activities that threaten marine resources and maritime security.

Over the last three months, the Indian Coast Guard has apprehended eight Bangladeshi fishing boats along with 170 crew members for similar violations, reflecting sustained enforcement efforts against illegal fishing in India’s maritime zones.
