The State government was exploring several options like annual contracts to see that the price of eggs supplied to students remained stable throughout the year, Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa said here on Thursday.
He was responding to a question by Harish Poonja in the Legislative Assembly, who said that government school teachers in charge of midday meals were forced to contribute some money whenever the prices of eggs rose.
“We are aware of the problems faced by teachers. As of now, the government is paying for procurement of eggs two days a week. The Azim Premji Foundation is paying for eggs bought on four other days of the week. We are releasing fixed amounts of money to schools for egg purchase. But then, we cannot increase our rates only for two days. We are trying to find a solution to the problem,’’ he said.
Speaker U.T. Khadar intervened by saying that the government had to find a long-term solution to the problem, as the price of eggs kept fluctuating. The Minister said the government was considering entering into annual contracts to ensure price stability.
V. Sunil Kumar wanted to know if the government was sure that consuming eggs was safe for children, in the wake of news reports that eggs could contain carcinogenic materials.
Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said studies had shown that eating eggs was safe and nutritious, and that the news reports had referred only to one brand of eggs that allegedly contained some carcinogenic elements.
