Marking World Wetlands Day, the Department of Posts on Tuesday released a special postal cover featuring the blackbuck found in Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary, highlighting the ecological and cultural significance of one of Tamil Nadu’s most important wetland ecosystems.
World Wetlands Day is observed this year with the theme “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage.” Point Calimere (Kodiyakkarai) is among the most significant wintering grounds for migratory birds in southern India, with over 250 species of water and land birds recorded in and around the sanctuary. The Department of Posts had earlier brought out a series of six special covers focusing on migratory birds to underline their conservation importance.
The blackbuck population at Point Calimere represents one of only three distinct habitats for the species in Tamil Nadu. The other two are located at Guindy National Park in Chennai and near Sathyamangalam in Erode district.
The special cover was released at the sanctuary by Chief Postmaster General (Tamil Nadu Circle) Mariamma Thomas, in the presence of Postmaster General (Central Region) T. Nirmala Devi, Assistant Director (Business Development) M. Ganesh, Pattukkottai Postal Superintendent S. Ganeshkumar, and other postal officers and staff.
The cover features a colour image of the blackbuck, a special cancellation, and the animal’s name rendered in Tamil script, adding to its thematic and aesthetic value.
Officials said the initiative sought to raise public awareness of wetland conservation, biodiversity protection, and the ecological role of wetlands, while also reflecting the department’s social responsibility.
