Kerala has immense potential for investment, and expatriate entrepreneurs should make use of the opportunities available in the State, said T.S. Pattabhiraman, chairman and managing director of Kalyan Silks.

Speaking at the World Malayalee Council, Indian Region’s first business conclave called ‘Emerge 2026’ in Coimbatore, he said Kerala had considerable scope for new businesses, investments and a business-friendly atmosphere. “The State should create an environment that encourages entrepreneurship and attracts more investment,” he added.

Sharing his journey in the textiles business, he said: “There were only two spinning and weaving mills in Kerala —Chackalo and Seetharaman. I belong to the Seetharaman family. We eventually lost everything, and what my brother and I have built today has been nothing short of a rebirth,” he added.

When Mr. Pattabhiraman took over the showroom from his father at the age of 22, he rebranded the showroom, and now his two sons take the brand across Kerala.

“We had just five employees. Today, we have 50 showrooms. My daughters-in-law take care of the hypermarket division. I also want the third generation, my grandchildren, to enter the business. I brought them into the fold at the right time and created a youth-focused fashion brand with products priced under ₹1,000. We are slowly expanding in Tamil Nadu and Dubai, where we now have 12 outlets. We are also planning an IPO soon,” he added.

The conclave discussed new opportunities and challenges faced by businesses. The need to encourage the younger generation towards entrepreneurship and ensure the continuity and growth of businesses were highlighted.

Sessions were held on subjects like India’s growth in the changing global order, financial management for sustainable growth, and generational transition in businesses.

The event, spearheaded by P. Padmakumar, president of WMC, Indian Region, and Rajan P. Nair, president of Business Forum, brought together over 200 entrepreneurs from different States.
