Relatives of a 29-year-old day labourer, who was found dead at his house at Selliyampalayam near Anthiyur on Sunday night, have raised suspicion over his death.
The Anthiyur police received information around 11.45 p.m. on Sunday that, the labourer, identified as Venkatesh Prashanth, had been found dead at his house. Inspector Shanmugavelu visited the spot and conducted an inquiry.
According to the police, Venkatesh had earlier reprimanded his wife, Yuvarani, for speaking to a man from the same locality over phone. She had subsequently stopped talking to Venkatesh.
The couple had been married for six years and has a daughter. Yuvarani is currently four months pregnant.
On Sunday, Venkatesh returned home drunk and picked up an argument with his wife. During the argument, Yuvarani attempted to consume cow dung powder kept at home, but he stopped her.
Later in the day, neighbours rushed to the house on hearing Yuvarani’s alarm and found Venkatesh dead.
During the inquiry, Yuvarani reportedly told the police that she had slept in another room with their daughter as her husband was drunk. On hearing a noise from the bedroom, she went there and found him dead.
Venkatesh’s relatives, however, alleged suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
The police sent the body to the Government Hospital in Anthiyur for a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, Yuvarani was taken to the government hospital after she reportedly told her relatives that she had consumed cow dung powder.
The police said the cause of Venkatesh’s death could be ascertained only after they received the post-mortem examination report.
