MGU partners with foreign universities for global dual degrees

Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), Kottayam, has launched international joint and dual degree programmes on its campus and affiliated colleges.

An official statement recently said the MGU had formed academic partnerships with Ghent University (Belgium), Central European University (Vienna), and Leeds Beckett University (U.K.) to offer these programmes. According to university officials, the aim of launching joint and dual degree courses is to provide students with international exposure by allowing them to study part of a programme at the MGU and the rest at the partner institutions abroad.

“The students begin a programme at the MGU and complete it at a partner university, graduating either with a joint degree from two or more institutions or separate degrees from each partnering university. This exposure helps cultivate multidisciplinary thinking, enhances language proficiency, and improves cultural adaptability—qualities highly valued by global employers,” said C.T. Aravindakumar, Vice-Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University.

This is the first time a public university in Kerala has initiated such a programme. The first international dual degree course, a Master’s in Journalism and Mass Communication, will be offered by St. Teresa’s College (Autonomous), Ernakulam, in collaboration with Leeds Beckett University, U.K.

According to Mr. Aravindakumar, the move towards internationalisation responds to the growing demand among students in Kerala for degrees of international standing. It also aims to enhance their global employability while addressing the massive outflow of students from the State.
