Minister for Non-Resident Tamils’ Welfare K. Thennarasu inaugurated a library built at a cost of ₹22 lakh at the Sri Lankan Tamils Rehabilitation Camp at Gangaikondan near here on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, he said the rehabilitation camps of Sri Lankan Tamils across Tamil Nadu were being given facelift to ensure decent living for the residents by strengthening the basic infrastructure facilities in the camps. As part of this drive, a new library with internet facility had been built at a cost of ₹22 lakh in the Gangaikondan rehabilitation camp, which would be useful for the youths preparing for competitive examinations.

The monthly assistance for the head of each Sri Lankan Tamil family had been increased from ₹1,500 to ₹1,800 after the government assumed office under the leadership of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The monthly assistance for members above the age of 12 had been hiked from ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 while the children below the age of 12 were being given ₹600 which was ₹500 earlier, the Minister informed.

“Since the old houses in the rehabilitation camps were in bad shape, repairing of these houses and the construction of new houses in the camps were going on,” Mr. Thennarasu said.

When asked about the Dharapuram and Madurantakam by-poll outcome, the Minister hoped that the ruling TVK candidates would register “resounding victory” in these two constituencies.

District Collector Anand Mohan, Director of Department of Non-Resident Tamils Welfare and Rehabilitation R. Sathish and MLAs Reddiyarpatti V. Narayanan of Nanguneri and R.S. Murughan of Tirunelveli were present.
