The Muslim Youth League blocked the Kozhikode-Palakkad National Highway 966 at Mailampulli, near Mundur, in the district on Wednesday (September 16), protesting the construction of a toll booth.
Muslim Youth League workers under the Kongad constituency unit marched from Mailampulli bazaar to the construction site and staged a blockade on the highway, raising slogans against the toll booth.
District Youth League general secretary Riyas Nalakkath led the protest. The protesters sat on the road and staged a blockade. Police arrested them and removed them forcibly.
Inaugurating the protest, Mr. Nalakkath said the highway had been expanded without proper planning and that accidents and deaths were reported frequently. He said the Youth League would continue its protest until the toll booth construction was stopped.
Constituency president Mohammedali Karimba presided over the programme.
District office-bearers Ashraf Vazhamburam and Kadar Ponnankode, working committee members Irshad and Naseeb, and constituency office-bearers Noufal Thachampara, Kasim, Shafeeq, Mansoor and Ashiq spoke.
General secretary Noufal C.P. welcomed the gathering.
