Overnight heavy rain caused inconvenience to road users in Ramanathapuram and Rameswaram on Wednesday morning.
After the sky remaining overcast on Tuesday with a mild drizzle, the district witnessed widespread sudden downpour from the 2.30 a.m. till 5.30 a.m.
This led to stagnation of water on many low-lying areas in Ramanathapuram town. Ramanathapuram-Rameswaram road stretch near Bharathi Nagar was submerged with rainwater. Similarly, rainwater mixed with underground sewage got stagnant on the Vallal Pari Municipal Middle School.
Municipal workers used tankers to suck the stangant water. With no further rain in the morning, the problem was mitigated within few hours.
Similar water stagnantion was reported in low-lying areas in Rameswaram island near the municipal office, Market Street, Lakshmana Theertham and Thangachimadam Middle street.
The highest rainfall in the district was reported in Thangachimadam that recorded 33 mm of rainfall. This was followed by Pamban 29.20, Mudukulathur 25.40, Mandapam 23, Ramanathapuram and Kamuthi 22 mm each, Tondi 19 and R.S. Mangalam 14.40 mm.
