The police on Tuesday destroyed 2,192 kg of ganja confiscated in 1,317 cases in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode and The Nilgiris districts.

The narcotics were incinerated at a government-authorised private facility in Chettipalayam under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Coimbatore Range, V. Sasi Mohan.

A special team was formed by the DIG to destroy the narcotics without causing harm to the environment, as per the instructions of the Judiciary for safe disposal, the police sources said.

Ganja confiscated in the four districts was destroyed in bulk quantities thrice in the past. In the three operations, 1624 kg of ganja confiscated in 797 were destroyed.

The police officials said the operations will be sustained in future, with the intent of eradicating narcotics in the society in entirety.
