As part of their journey towards ‘Zero Accident Kumari’, Kanniyakumari District Police have started giving breath analysers to police stations and traffic units to prevent drunken driving, the prime cause for reckless rash driving, road rage and consequent accidents, often leading to fatalities.
In the first phase, 40 police stations and traffic divisions in the district have received alcohol breath analysers from Superintendent of Police R. Stalin.
These kits will be deployed during surprise vehicle checks to trap drivers and bike riders under the influence of alcohol and initiate legal action against them. Even though the punishment for drunken driving starts with a fine and simple imprisonment, ‘repeat offenders’ may even lose their driving licence permanently, while causing deaths in an inebriated condition will lead to registration of cases under sections attracting serious punishments.
Since the festival season is fast approaching, the police have taken this drastic step to discipline the revellers celebrating Christmas, New Year and Pongal in a responsible and dignified manner.
The police also organise ‘reels competition’ as part of their ‘Zero Accident Kumari’ drive on the topics ‘No helmet, no entry’; ‘Avoid rash driving’; ‘Avoid drunken driving’; ‘Avoid wheeling and racing’; ‘Avoid cell phone driving’; ‘Avoid traffic signal violation’; ‘Avoid triples riding’; ‘Avoid juvenile riding’; and ‘Without seatbelt’.
The participants, especially youngsters, should submit their reels on these topics before January 5, 2026, via [email protected], which should effectively create road safety awareness among road-users. The winners will be honoured with three cash awards ranging from ₹7,500 to ₹15,000.
