A district-level review and coordination committee meeting on tobacco control, and the monitoring and evaluation of iodine deficiency disorders was convened in Krishnagiri under the aegis of the district administration on Wednesday (October 7, 2026).
Chairing the committee, Collector C. Dinesh Kumar ascertained the implementation of the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 and the compliance including displaying warning boards at cigarette sale counters. The Collector also encouraged institutions to ensure tobacco-free campuses and secure ToFEI (Tobacco-Free Educational Institution) certification. Officials were instructed to create awareness in schools and colleges on the ill-effects of tobacco consumption.
On the prevention and evaluation of iodine deficiency disorders, Anganwadi centres were to play a crucial role in emphasising the importance of iodised salt. The district administration has also advised against the use of Himalayan salt due to its iodine deficiency.
