Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionaries and residents from Sellur, Theppakulam and Gomathipuram neighbourhoods submitted petition to the Collectorate on Monday, seeking immediate remedies for chronic civic issues like waterlogging, poor roads and garbage buildup.
Priya, zonal deputy secretary of the TVK in Sellur, said that rainwater stagnation and poorly laid roads had made everyday life difficult in many streets. She alleged that garbage bins were either insufficient or poorly maintained, leading to rubbish piling up in open spaces across localities.
Residents also complained that drinking water was often mixed with sewage, as drainage lines overflow and run through residential stretches. They said repeated petitions in the past had not resulted in any concrete action, forcing them to approach the district administration once again.
Another petitioner, Bharathi from the Theppakulam, said that during rains, drainage overflow and stagnation of water had increased the presence of insects and pests, affecting the health and safety of families. She pointed out that during heavy showers, contaminated water sometimes reaches up to the houses, worrying residents about disease outbreaks.
From Gomathipuram, Sudha and other residents highlighted the growing menace of stray dogs, alleging that children, women and the elderly face constant fear while walking or travelling on two-wheelers. They said there had already been a case of a seven-year-old child being bitten and added that, despite sterilisation and vaccination drives, the number of stray dogs and related attacks had not reduced to a safe level.
