The Shivamogga city unit of the Youth Congress demanded that the State government bring in a strict law to stop honour killings in the State. Representatives of the forum submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, to the Deputy Commissioner’s office in the city on December 30.
The workers said that a recent case reported in Hubballi — a farmer, opposed to his daughter’s choice of a life partner, killed her — was an inhuman act and had made people of civilised society bow their heads in shame. The incident showed how caste-based atrocities are deep-rooted in society. Only by bringing in a stringent law can such crimes be stopped, they argued.
Referring to certain statements online, the workers opined that a section of people, practising the caste system, had been defending the crime. This attitude stresses the need for timely intervention of the ruling government by bringing in laws. The government should encourage inter-caste marriages and ensure protection of couples who marry against the wishes of their families, they said.
The courts also ruled that “honour killings” deserved to be dealt with seriously. So, the Chief Minister should take the recent case seriously and initiate the process to formulate a strict law, the workers stated in the memorandum.
Shivamogga district Congress Committee general secretary K. Ranganath, Youth Congress activists H.P. Girish, Sharath Mariyappa and others were present.
