The police on Monday arrested six migrant workers from Bihar, including a minor boy, on charge of murdering a fellow worker from the same State at Chettipalayam near Coimbatore city.
The arrested have been identified as Rajakumar Mandal, his father Nakul Mandal, Bikash Kumar, Avdhesh Kumar Mandal, Ravikumar and a 17-year-old boy.
The accused, the deceased Rakesh Kumar (23) and his brothers had been working as daily wage labourers under a contractor for an industrial unit at Malumichampatti for the past one year. They stayed in a line house at Ganapathy Nagar.
The police said that the accused and Rakesh Kumar had a quarrel over cooking-related issues in their residence 10 days ago, leading to enmity and frequent verbal altercations.
The six accused persons consumed alcohol around 9.30 p.m. on Sunday when the deceased and his brothers were having dinner inside a room.
According to the police, Rakesh Kumar had a verbal altercation with the accused, following which Rajakumar Mandal attempted to strangulate him. As one of the brothers of Rakesh Kumar intervened, the accused assaulted them. Meanwhile, Rajakumar Mandal grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Rakesh Kumar on his neck, causing profuse bleeding, the police said.
The injured man was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where he died without responding to treatment around 4 a.m. on Monday.
The Chettipalayam police registered a case against the six persons for murder. Inspector Prem Anand M. and his team arrested them on Monday. The first five accused were produced before a court for judicial remand. The police produced the minor boy before the juvenile justice board, which sent him to a juvenile delinquents observation home.Â
