After months of soaring heat, the twin towns of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai and its surroundings enjoyed welcome showers on Friday afternoon for more than 30 minutes that brought down the temperature considerably.
With temperature in Tirunelveli district often crossing 40 degree Celsius, the residents were struggling to cope with the heat wave. While the coastal areas could find some solace from the sea breeze during the day, the interior parts were reeling under baking heat, forcing the people to pray for heavy downpour.
The prayer got answered finally on Friday afternoon with sharp showers lashing Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai for more than 30 minutes leading to water stagnation along the roads.
The sudden downpour caused severe traffic snarl along a few busy roads, including Ambasamudram Road traversing Melaplayam. With the rainwater stagnating along the badly damaged stretch between VST Mosque Junction and the traffic island near Reliance Fuel Station, vehicular movement came to a grinding halt for more than 20 minutes with no policemen in the vicinity to clear the traffic jam.
Similar situation prevailed between Murugankurichi and Vannarpet even though the police have fitted CCTV cameras along this road to monitor and regulate vehicular traffic.
