Sugar mill workers stage protest in Dharmapuri

Farmers and workers of a cooperative sugar mill staged a day-long token hunger strike at Palacode in Dharmapuri, on Thursday (September 24, 2026), over a raft of demands.

The protest was held due to unfulfilled demands which the farmers and the society workers believed were hurting the operation of the cooperative societies. According to the protesters, cane growers were affected by abysmal rains on one hand, and the failure to conceive irrigation schemes to help out cane growers, on the other.

They also called out the dual pay system differentiating cooperative society run sugar mills and public sector sugar mills.

The protesters called for fulfilling their demands, including new irrigation schemes and demands including pay revision, and worker benefits.
