Distribution of one-gram gold rings to babies born in government hospitals under the Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam commenced in central districts on Monday with Ministers and Collectors presenting the rings to the infants at various hospitals.
Newborns delivered in government health institutions in Tamil Nadu on or after June 22, are eligible to get the gold rings. In Tiruchi district, 3,341 infants born in government hospitals and primary health centres are eligible to get the rings. These included 1,205 newborns delivered in Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH), 854 in Manapparai GH and 726 in Srirangam GH and 556 in Thuraiyur GH. On Monday, 217 of these newborns were presented with the rings at the respective hospitals, according to an official release.
The Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Corporation Chairman Ku. Pa. Krishnan, Collector Pratik Tayal and Tiruverumbur MLA S. Viji presented the rings to the children at the MGMGH.
In Thanjavur, Minister for Agriculture R.Vinoth presented the rings to newborns at the Government Headquarters Hospital at Kumbakonam. Collector R. Revathi was present.
Mr. Vinoth said 3,312 infants in the district are eligible to get the rings. For children delivered in the hospitals from September 28, the rings with unique serial numbers and tamper proof packaging would be presented when the mother and child are discharged.
In Nagapattinam, Minister for Minorities Welfare A.M. Shajahan distributed the rings to newborns at the Nagapattinam Government Medical College and Hospital. Collector J.K. Praveen Kumar was present. According to a press release, 1,309 babies are eligible to get the rings in the district.
In Pudukottai district, Collector M. Aruna handed over the rings to 25 mothers at the Pudukottai Ranee’s Government Hospital. About 3,095 newborns are being given the rings in the district now.
Karur Collector C. Muthukumaran presented the rings to newborns at the Government Medical College and Hospital in the town. About 1,445 babies are eligible to get the rings.
In Tiruvarur district, 44 infants received the gift on the launch day. While gold rings were presented to the parents of 10 infants hailing from Tiruvarur and Nannilam taluks and born at the Government Hospital, Vijayapuram, Tiruvarur, 12 children hailing from Mannargudi and Kottur taluks and born at the Government District Headquarters Hospital, Mannargudi, 11 each, having their residence in Vlangaiman and Koradachery taluks and Muthupettai and Thiruthuraipoondi taluks received their gifts as they were born at the Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvarur, and at the Government Taluk Headquarters Hospital at Thiruthuraipoondi, sources added.
