Three boys, including a teenaged person, drowned in sea at Motta Gopuram Beach in Thoothukudi on Monday.
Police said the deceased had been identified as A. Naren Srikarthik, 12 of Jagir Hussaain Nagar, V. Thirumani, 13 of Geethajeevan Nagar, and K. Mugendiran, 12 from the same locality. The boys with few others from the same locality had gone to bathe in the sea at Motta Gopuram Beach on Monday afternoon.
While they were bathing, a giant wave swept away four of the boys into the sea. Of them, one boy was struggling in the water. A fisherman, who noticed this, rushed in a fibre boat and rescued the boy, bringing him safely to the shore. The rescued boy informed them that the other three boys had been swept away by the waves.
Following this, information was passed on to the Thalamuthunagar police and Tharuvaikulam Coastal Security Group Police. Police personnel along with the fishermen rushed to the spot and launched a search operation. During the search, bodies of deceased boys were recovered.
The bodies were sent to Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital for post mortem examination.
A case has been registered by Tharuvaikulam Coastal Security Group Police and further investigations are on.
