Tiruchi celebrates 77th Republic Day with pomp and honours

Ceremonial parade, honouring the heirs of freedom fighters, and cultural programmes marked the 77th Republic Day celebration held at the Armed Reserve police ground in Tiruchi on Monday.

Collector V. Saravanan unfurled the national flag, besides releasing pigeons and balloons on the occasion. Accompanied by Inspector-General of Police, Central zone, V. Balakrishnan, he inspected and accepted the guard of honour by the Armed Reserve police personnel and felicitated freedom fighters and their family members with shawls and mementos.

Mr. Saravanan presented the Chief Minister’s medals to 119 police personnel in recognition of their service. Similarly, 770 officials and staff members of various departments were given meritorious certificates. A total of 21 beneficiaries were given welfare assistance worth ₹7.57 lakh.

N. Kamini, Commissioner of Police, Tiruchi, S. Selvanagarathinam, Superintendent of Police, and senior officials participated in the function.

Earlier, Mr. Saravanan paid respects at the First World War Memorial in Gandhi Market.

Mayor M. Anbazhagan unfurled the national flag at the Republic Day function held at the office of the Tiruchi City Corporation. Commissioner L. Madhubalan, Deputy Mayor G. Divya and senior officials participated. Later, he paid respects at the Gandhi Asthi Mandapam and at the War Memorial at Gandhi Market.

Mr. Anbazhagan presented service recognition awards to 27 officers and employees of the Corporation for completing 25 years of service. About 51 employees received appreciation certificates for their dedicated service.

Member of the Vice-Chancellor Committee, V. Rajesh Kannan, unfurled the national flag at the function held at Bharathidasan University’s Palkalaiperur campus. He distributed certificates to eight National Cadet Corps for participating in various national events.

Marking the Republic Day celebrations, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College unfurled a 77-foot-long national flag at Kallanai Anicut. The flag was sponsored by Badrinath, a city-based businessman.
