It was on July 4, 2021 that the first kidney transplantation surgery was performed at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi.

The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH), Tiruchi, has completed 50 kidney transplantation surgeries since the launch of its renal transplant programme in July 2021.
According to an official release, the first kidney transplantation at the hospital was performed on July 4, 2021. The 50th surgery was carried out on Sunday using a kidney retrieved from a brain-dead donor at the Government Rajaji Medical College and Hospital, Madurai, in accordance with the guidelines of the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN).
The organ was transplanted to a 54-year-old patient from Perambalur district, who had been undergoing dialysis at MGMGH for the past four years. The surgery was performed free of cost under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. The patient is now under continuous medical observation.
Of the 50 kidney transplants performed so far, 14 were from living related donors, and 36 were from organs retrieved from brain-dead donors, the press note added.
