Railway Protection Force (RPF) has apprehended two juveniles for pelting stones at moving passenger trains near Arsikere in Mysuru Division of South Western Railways.
After receiving complaints about two incidents of stone pelting in Arsikere railway jurisdiction earlier this month, the RPF swung into action and managed to track down the two minor boys involved in separate stone pelting incidents that took place on February 1 and 2.
When the complaints of stone pelting by the passengers to the on duty Train Ticket Examiners (TTE) were communicated to the authorities, the officials meticulously reviewed hours of CCTV footage from the affected rail stretches.Â
âBy combining digital surveillance with intelligence from local sources, investigators pinpointed the exact locations of the attacks. This lead eventually took them to two minor boys who were involved in these eventsâ, said a statement by the RPF.
The juveniles were apprehended and their guardians were summoned to the station, the RPF said. âOfficials conducted a session with the families to explain the life-threatening risks such âpranksâ pose to passengers and the severe legal ramifications for the perpetratorsâ, the statement said.
The RPF said that both juveniles are being dealt with under the relevant provisions of the Railways Act and the Juvenile Justice Act.
Meanwhile, the RPF has sought to remind the public that stone-pelting is a serious criminal offense. The legal consequences for pelting stone, which can cause fatal injuries to the passengers, are rigorous, the RPF said, pointing out that Section 153 of the Railway Act says that âAny person found pelting stones at a train faces imprisonment for a term which may extend up to 5 years, a heavy fine, or both, depending on the severity of the offense.
The statement also urged the public to report any suspicious activity near railway tracks to the Railway Helpline, 130 or the nearest RPF Post.
