The R.K. Nagar police have arrested two youth and apprehended four juveniles in connection with the theft of a garland made of currency notes, which was offered to a Vinayaka idol during Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations in Tondiarpet.

The police said Vigneshwaran, 33, of Tondiarpet had installed the idol near his house on September 13 after obtaining permission from the authorities. On September 15, he adorned it with a garland made of 100 ₹100 notes and returned home. When he checked the idol early on September 16, the garland was missing. He lodged a complaint with the R.K. Nagar police.

A special police team examined CCTV camera footage and arrested Ruban, 20, of Tondiarpet and Santhosh, 19, of Patel Nagar in connection with the theft on Thursday. The police also questioned four juveniles in the case. The accused had spent part of the stolen money, and only ₹5,100 was recovered from them.

The two youth were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody, while the four juveniles were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and appropriate legal action was initiated.
