Personnel from the Mundoor Gram Panchayat in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada took help of the police to remove on Wednesday an unauthorised pedestal that had come up in Bhaktakodi junction.
The police said the pedestal had come up at the junction in 2017. Following a disturbance between two groups, panchayat officers and police officers visited the spot. A decision was taken to remove the pedestal.
The secretary of the Mundoor Gram Panchayat got information that some persons had placed a pole with a religious flag on the pedestal. He visited the place on December 16. As it was likely to create law and order problem, the secretary took help of the police to remove the unauthorised structure on Wednesday.
On a complaint by the secretary, the Puttur Rural police registered a case against persons who laid the unauthorised pedestal in 2017.
The case was registered for offences under Section 270 of Bharatiya Nayaya Sanhita and under Section 3 of Karnataka Open Place Disfigurement Act.
The police said the pedestal was placed before the Assembly elections and there were not developments later. There were allegations that the pole with religious flag was being placed on the pedestal for political reason. This will be looked into as part of the investigation, the police added.
