VCK demands basic amenities for SC/ST residents in the Nilgiris

The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) have demanded that basic amenities be provided to villages populated by communities from underprivileged backgrounds in Kookalthorai in the Nilgiris.

The VCK alleged that residents of Anna Nagar, Indira Nagar, Sundakkarai, Jeeve Nagar and others, in the Kookalthorai panchayat limits did not have adequate access to basic amenities such as good roads, street lights and drinking water. The VCK on Monday even staged a protest in front of the Kookalthorai panchayat office demanding better housing, a community hall and other facilities for residents in the village, a majority of whom belong to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.

The party alleged that the communities have been neglected for over 50 years and that government officials had neglected the villages because they were populated by SC/ST communities.

K. Sagadevan, deputy zonal secretary of the VCK, delivered a speech at the protest and demanded that the government immediately look into the needs of the residents and take necessary steps to ensure that they have access to basic amenities.
