Madurai Division of Southern Railway has said that it has strengthened its water quality monitoring system to ensure safe, clean and potable drinking water for passengers at railway stations across the division.
A statement said that water supplied at stations was being regularly tested for residual chlorine, bacteriological and chemical parameters as per the prescribed standards. The systematic testing and monitoring mechanism enabled early detection of any variation and prompt corrective action wherever required.
During the week of September 14 to 20, residual chlorine testing was carried out on 230 samples, of which 205 met the prescribed requirements. Bacteriological testing of 39 samples found 35 samples satisfactory. Wherever necessary, corrective measures, including chlorination, checking of distribution systems and other remedial actions, were taken promptly, the statement said.
Chemical analysis of water was also being undertaken as per the prescribed protocol. In case any parameter was found to be beyond the permissible limit, necessary action, including changing the source of water wherever required, was initiated to ensure the safety of water supplied to passengers.
In line with the observations made in the CAG report, the Madurai Division had further reinforced its monitoring arrangements, with particular emphasis on adherence to testing schedules, regular supervision and timely remedial action, the statement added.
