A group of migrant labour families residing in Lakshmi Nagar in the Gangamma Gudi Police Station limits have sought police protection, citing fear of harassment and false accusations of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
The workers alleged that they were being falsely branded as Bangladeshi nationals by “politically motivated locals”. .
In a letter submitted to D.L. Nagesh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West Division), the families said they were living under constant anxiety following incidents of alleged targeting of West Bengal migrant workers in parts of the city.
The complaint was submitted by Rashikul Sheik, a scrap and rag picker working in the GBA limits, on behalf of 33 migrant labour families currently living in the area. The families said they were all originally from Nadia district in West Bengal, and have been living and working in Bengaluru for nearly 18 years, including the last 18 months at Lakshmi Nagar, without any problems until recently.
The families stressed that all members are law-abiding Indian citizens employed in the unorganised sector as daily-wage workers and have Aadhaar cards and voter identity cards to establish their citizenship.
They said they were willing to cooperate with any verification process and produce all necessary documents, if required. Seeking intervention, the group requested the police to provide protection to their families, prevent harassment and intimidation, and ensure that they were allowed to live and work peacefully in the city with dignity.
