Western districts have fared well in carrying out digital crop survey for the Rabi season.
The Nilgiris ranks first in the region with completion of 65.5% of the target, followed by Salem (58.9%), Namakkal (63.3%), Coimbatore (54%), Erode (53.1%) and Tiruppur (51%).
Kanyakumari (58.1%) and Theni (60%) also figure among the eight districts that have delivered desired results, according to official sources.
In terms of acreage under survey, the highest is in Salem district (13,17,997 acres), followed by Coimbatore (8,85,540), Erode (8,82,114 acres), Tiruppur (8,61,674 acres), Namakkal (8,47,135 acres), and The Nilgiris (2,44,021 acres).
A total of 882 surveyors were deployed on Thursday by the departments of Agriculture, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering, and Agricultural Marketing departments in Salem district. The number of surveyors were 387 in Tiruppur district, 476 in Erode district, 482 in Coimbatore district, 590 in Namakkal district and 102 in The Nilgiris.
On a single day on Thursday, survey of 79,446 acres was completed in Salem district, 40,078 acres in Tiruppur district, 42,754 acres in Erode district, 42,272 acres in Coimbatore district, 48,635 acres in Namakkal district, and 14,200 acres in The Nilgiris, as per official data.
The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, which has been monitoring the performance of the districts on an hourly basis, is understood to have fixed January 27 as the deadline for completing the target.
