Stones were thrown on the Chennai Egmore – Tirunelveli Vande Bharat Express on Sunday evening between Vriddhachalam and Talanallur railway stations causing damage to the glass windows of six coaches.
Preliminary inquiry revealed a group of boys aged between 15 and 16, who were walking alongside the railway track, threw stones at the train causing damage to the glass windows of C5, C6, C7, E2, C17 and C18 coaches.
No injuries to passengers were reported. The Railway Protection Force and the Government Railway Police have launched a search for the boys in the nearby villages.
Upon arrival of the train at Tiruchi Junction, the divisional railway officers inspected the affected coaches and interacted with passengers and confirmed that no one on board had suffered any injury. After inspection of the coaches, the officials confirmed the train was safe for further operation. The windows are double-sealed toughened glass and the damage was limited only to the outer layer of the glass.
A press release from the Tiruchi Division said throwing stones at trains was a criminal offence under Sections 153 and 154 of the Railway Act, 1989.
