The mortal remains of woman head constable Kannagi, who died after being pushed by a youth in Paramakudi, was buried with police honours amid a 30-gun salute.
Kannagi, 35, worked as a head constable at the Parthibanur police station in Ramanathapuram district. On Monday night, she was on duty at the Paramakudi Government District Headquarters Hospital outpost.
At that time, some auto drivers who had quarrelled at the Paramakudi bus stand came to the hospital for treatment. A youth assaulted one of the injured persons receiving treatment there.
Head Constable Kannagi tried to chase and catch the youth. The youth pushed the woman head constable and fled. She fell down, sustained severe injuries and fainted. When she was rescued and given first aid, she died.
Following this, the Paramakudi Town Police registered a case against V. Karuppu Raja, 25, son of Velpandi from Kumarakurichi in Sivagangai district, who was allegedly responsible for the head constable’s death, under sections for acting with intent to cause death and preventing a public servant from discharging official duty, and arrested him.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday afternoon, her body underwent a post-mortem examination and was handed over to her family members.
Later, at the Jeeva Nagar burial ground in Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram Range DIG N. Manivannan, District Superintendent of Police G. Chandeesh and Paramakudi DSP Sukumaran placed floral wreaths and paid their respects.
Subsequently, her body was buried with police honours amid a 30-gun salute. The deceased head constable is survived by her husband, Muniyasamy, who works as a bus driver, a daughter and a son.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced a solatium of ₹30 lakh to the family of deceased woman head constable.
