ZP CEO asks banks to finance social security schemes on priority

Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Narwade Vinayak Karbhari on Thursday, September 24, instructed banks to provide loan facilities on a priority basis to schemes like Mudra, PM-SVANidhi, Self-Help Groups, MSME etc., that support self-employment.

Chairing the district level bankers’ committee meeting here, Mr. Karbhari said there were concerns that banks did not respond appropriately to social security schemes. The targets of banks in these sectors were lagging behind. As IT and BT companies have come forward to invest in the coastal area, Mangaluru was now opening up to the global hub. Along with trade, there has also been a lot of increase in employment opportunities, he said.

₹1.47 lakh cr. business

District Lead Canara Bank’s Deputy General Manager Venkata Vara Prasad said banks in the district recorded a total business of ₹1,47,818.56 crore by the end of June 2026, a growth of 11.67% compared to the same period in the previous year.

As many as 669 bank branches collected a total deposit of ₹86,933.49 crore, an increase of 12.99% year-on-year. Banks had disbursed ₹60,885.07 crore in loans, an increase of 9.83%. The credit-deposit ratio was 70.04% as on June 30, a decrease of 1.96% compared to March 30 of the previous year.

During Q1 of 2026-27, banks had disbursed a total of ₹14,910.39 crore in priority and non-priority sectors, achieving 76.53% progress against the target of ₹19,482.38 crore.

From April to June 2026, ₹373.86 crore has been disbursed under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana. As many as 10,134 savings accounts have been opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana saw enrolment of 9,420 beneficiaries while 19,953 people have registered for Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and 8,278 people have registered under the Atal Pension Yojana, he said.

Reserve Bank of India DGM Arun Kumar, NABARD DGM Sangeeta Karta, Lead Bank Manager Geeta Yashodhar and others were present.
