Pet shops in the district should compulsorily register with the Dakshina Kannada District Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to prevent cruelty to pet animals, said Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan on Tuesday.
Chairing the executive committee meeting of the District SPCA, Mr. Darshan said that owners of pet shops who have not yet registered should be given some time to complete the registration process. If the shops continue to function without registration, then officials should take necessary legal action, Mr. Darshan said.
The meeting discussed the proposed Praani Mitra hospital in Bodantila village of Mangaluru taluk, with a focus on treating street animals. The need for a place to bury animals, which die on the streets, to stop the bodies from decaying on the roads and other public places
Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department, N. Arun Kumar Shetty, spoke about the department’s public awareness programs regarding treatment facilities for street dogs, cats, and cattle. He also spoke about the enforcement of animal welfare laws in the district.
Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police K. Arun, Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Ravichandra Nayak, Assistant Commissioner of Police Geeta Kulkarni and District SPCA member Suma R. Nayak participated in the meeting.
