Faced with flak from the student community, parents, and educational institutions, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) on Tuesday announced the launch of its new students’ pass scheme from July 1.
At ₹1,100 for a comprehensive 30-day travel package and offering 33% savings on the average fare, its key features include 50 trips from any station. The three months’ pass is priced at ₹3,000. The pass offers significantly better value compared to other metro rail systems in India, says a release.
KMRL worked diligently to develop this affordable transportation solution, said Loknath Behera, managing director of the metro agency. “With an average/mean trip cost of ₹33, students would normally need to spend ₹1,650 for 50 trips. Our students’ pass at ₹1,100 provides a saving of ₹550, making Kochi metro one of the most student-friendly metro systems in India,” he added.
The pass will be available for purchase at all metro stations from July 1. Students should present valid identification documents during purchase and may be required to show identity cards during travel. The non-transferable pass has to be recharged after expiry of the pass period (31st day). If the card is not usable due to wear and tear, an additional ₹50 has to be paid for obtaining a new card. The pass will be available for students aged up to 30 years. Any misuse of the pass will attract severe penalty.
