A 30-year-old man was arrested at a toll gate at Nekkunthi village near Vaniyambadi town in Tirupattur on Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH-48) for possession of 450 kg gutka on Sunday.
Police said the arrested person was identified as G. Vignesh, a resident of Ambur town. He has worked in a private leather unit in the area for the past few years. Initial inquiry revealed that during routine vehicle searches at the toll gate, a police team was checking vehicles on specific inputs. Police stopped a SUV in which Vignesh was travelling. He was proceeding towards Bengaluru from Chennai. When stopped by police, Vignesh, who was driving the vehicle, gave contradictory answers about the purpose of travel.
Police got suspicious about him and checked the vehicle. They found the banned product. Police seized the product and the vehicle. A case was registered by Amballur police. He was arrested and lodged at sub jail in Tirupattur town. A probe is underway.
