The police arrested a 45-year-old man and his second wife on charges of abetting suicide after his 16-year-old daughter was found dead under suspicious circumstances at their house in Otteri on Thursday evening.
Police sources said the victim was identified as A. Nandhini, a Class 12 student at a government school in Madhavaram. She was lived with her father Amarnath, 45, after her parents became estranged over 10 years ago. Later, Amarnath married A. Usha, 40.
Usha physically assaulted Nandhini repeatedly. She also forced Nandhini to take care of the house and stopped her from going to school, the police said. Despite Nandhini’s repeated complaints, Amarnath did not prevent the abuse.
On Thursday, the girl did not come out of her room. Usha reportedly told a neighbour that the girl was lying unconscious. Then, one of her relatives rushed Nandhini to a government hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. After an investigation, the police arrested Amarnath and Usha.
