The Public Works Department (PWD) will install over 200 CCTV cameras at the Saket Courts complex to strengthen safety and surveillance, an official said on Friday.

The move came after an undertrial was killed inside a Saket court’s lockup last month following a scuffle with other inmates.

After the incident, the court ordered the installation of integrated security equipment at the main gates of the complex.

The official said that to prevent such incidents from recurring and to ensure 24/7 surveillance, the Delhi government has decided to invest ₹2.4 crore in modernising the existing security infrastructure of the court. According to the plan, bullet and dome cameras will be installed at the court building and residential complex.

The official said that the plan also includes the construction of a room for storing surveillance records and the installation of an internet protocol-based surveillance system.

A tender has been floated for the project, and it is expected to take three months to complete the work, the official added.

According to the Delhi High Court’s November 2021 direction, authorities at district courts were required to undertake a security audit, install CCTV cameras and check all vehicles entering and leaving the premises.
