The murder of a woman and her son at their home in Lajpat Nagar by her husband’s employee was premeditated as the accused entered their house with a knife, a police officer said on Friday.

Hours after he was scolded by the deceased woman, Ruchika Sewani, 42, for being irregular at work at her husband’s garment shop in Lajpat Nagar market and not returning the loan of ₹45,000 he took from him, Mukesh Kumar, 24, killed her and her 14-year-old son on Wednesday. He was nabbed from Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday afternoon while trying to flee to his home in Hajipur, Bihar.

Police remand

Mr. Kumar was produced in a local court on Friday, which remanded him in police custody for three days.

“During interrogation, he told the police that he got the knife from his rented apartment in Amar Colony,” said the officer.

According to the officer, when Mr. Kumar did not turn up for work on Wednesday, Ruchika first sent him a voice message asking him to return the money and phone, which he had borrowed, and then sent a few men to his house to “check and threaten him”.

Mr. Kumar also told the police that he had conveyed to Ruchika that he had been diagnosed with stones in his gall bladder and was unwell, but “she did not believe him”.

The police are also investigating whether there was another motive behind the killing and the involvement of any other person in helping him flee the city, the officer added.
