A 46-year-old sub-inspector (SI) attached to Brahmapuram police near Katpadi in Vellore was transferred to Armed Reserve (AR) wing of the district police after a video of him hitting a college student at a hotel went viral in social media platforms a few days ago.
Police said, based on an inquiry, the Superintendent of Police (SP) N. Mathivanan ordered the transfer of the police officer. Initial inquiry revealed that sub-inspector S. Karthigaiselvan was patrolling stretches in Katpadi on June 25 when he noticed a hotel open around 11 p.m. beyond closing hours.
Immediately, he asked hotel staff to close as the premises was functioning beyond permissible hours. As the staff pulled the shutters of the hotel, a college student rushed and enquired about food parcel availability. Police said that the sub-inspector intervened and asked the student to leave the spot as the hotel was closed.
An argument broke out between a policeman and the student. Later, the policeman pushed and hit the student from the hotel premises. The incident was captured in CCTV cameras in the hotel. The video of the incident went viral on social media platforms, inviting public outcry.
The policeman was transferred to the AR wing following the incident. Further probe is underway.
