Fishermen leader Karunamoorthy dies – The Hindu

M. Karunamoorthy, 55, a CPI (M) functionary, State leader of Tamil Nadu Fishermen Union Federation — CITU, and district secretary of Ramanathapuram Sea Workers Association, passed away due to an illness here on Saturday.

He is survived by his wife Venkateswari, daughter Suhasini and son Tharun.

According to fishermen association leaders, Karunamoorthy was one of the active union leaders fighting for the rights and needs of the working fishermen in the district and other places too.

Recently, he held a meeting to demand protective measures for country boat fishermen who were subjected to frequent attacks by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Several fishermen association leaders and workers paid homage to the mortal remains kept at his house on Kattu Pillaiyar Kovil Road in Rameswaram.

His family said the last rites would be performed on Sunday afternoon.
