Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Sunday (July 6, 2025) called for a transformation in Indiaâs cooperative sector, stating that transparency, technology adoption, and member welfare are the key pillars for success.Â
âWithout technology, there is no prosperity for cooperatives,â Mr. Shah said while addressing the fourth foundation day celebrations of the Ministry of Cooperation at Amul Dairy in Gujaratâs Anand.
âTransparency, technology, and keeping membersâ interests at the centre â these three principles must become the work culture of every cooperative from Jammu and Kashmir to Kamakhya(in Assam), and every village of the country,â the BJP leader said.Â
The Minister outlined an ambitious vision for the sector, citing the governmentâs achievements since establishing the dedicated cooperation ministry in 2021. âUnder Prime Minister Narendra Modiâs leadership, weâve registered 2 lakh Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACs), established Indiaâs first cooperative university, and created three national-level dairy cooperatives,â he said. Â
Mr. Shah also introduced a five-point roadmap for cooperative growth, and said: âFirst â People, meaning every initiative must benefit ordinary Indians. Second â PACs, strengthening our primary cooperative networks. Third â Platforms, meaning digital infrastructure. Fourth â Policy reforms. And fifth â Prosperity, not just for individuals but for entire communities, especially our farmers and labourers.âÂ
Highlighting success stories, the Union Minister predicted: âAmulâs turnover will cross âč1 lakh crore next year. This is the power of the cooperative model when implemented properly.â He inaugurated several new Amul facilities including a mozzarella cheese plant and automated processing units. Â
The Minister also paid tribute to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary, attributing the integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India to Mookerjeeâs efforts. He recalled Mookerjeeâs opposition to Article 370 and referenced his sloganââEk desh mein do Vidhan, do Pradhan aur Do Nishan nahi chalengeâ (One country cannot have two constitutions, two prime ministers, and two flags). Mr. Shah said Mookerjeeâs position laid the foundation for the removal of the constitutional provision and the regionâs full integration into India.
The BJP leader concluded with a call to action: âThe cooperative movement must become Indiaâs economic backbone. With 60+ initiatives already launched, weâre committed to making this sector a driver of inclusive growth.â Â
