At a webinar on ‘Tomorrow’s doctors and dentists: Skills that shape the future of healthcare’, in collaboration with The Hindu and the SRM Institute of Science and Technology, panellists spoke about how young doctors should develop empathy, and a desire to continue learning throughout their life.

Provided an overview of medical education, Nitin M. Nagarkar, pro Vice-Chancellor (Medicine and Health Sciences) SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre said it had transformed over the years, with the introduction of new policies, information technology, robotics, and simulation-based learning. “Every doctor must get involved in community outreach, the preventive and promotive aspect is very important,” Dr. Nagarkar said, adding that paying attention to research is important as the need for new technology is growing.

Most diseases in the body can be diagnosed during an oral examination of the patient, Vivek Narayanan, dean, professor and head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, SRM Dental College, said.

“Doctors must be prepared to unlearn and relearn. A doctor of the future must be proficient in digital technology,” T. R. Muralidharan, head of Cardiac Sciences at the SRM Global Hospital, said.

A surgeon should be a good team player, C.S. Pramesh, Director, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, said, speaking of the surgeons’ decision-making on when to operate. “Surgery is a dramatic event, where patients give themselves up to the expertise or knowledge of a surgeon,” Dr. Pramesh said.
