Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Monday condemned allegations by Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav about high costs of renovating the Speaker’s official residence and sought an “unconditional apology from the Congress leader.

On Sunday, Mr. Yadav had alleged that more than ₹2.35 crore has been spent on the official residence of the Speaker (Bungalow No. 9, Sham Nath Marg), out of which ₹94.69 lakh has been spent solely on the renovation of toilets and bathrooms.

“He [Mr. Gupta] has directed that you should immediately withdraw your statements and submit an unconditional written apology to him within three days of receipt of this correspondence,” the Speaker’s Secretary said in a letter on Monday to the Delhi Congress chief.

Responding to the letter from the Speaker’s office, Mr. Yadav’s office said in a letter on Monday that Mr. Yadav had raised legitimate concerns regarding the excessive expenditure of public money incurred by certain BJP legislators.

“As Leader of the Opposition, the Speaker had raised similar concerns, including his strong objections to the renovation of the ‘Sheeshmahal’ by the previous AAP Chief Minister. We have raised the issue of the expenditure involved in the renovation of the Speaker’s official residence in the same spirit of accountability, a responsibility we share as representatives of a responsible National Opposition Party,” the letter read.
