The Election Commission of India (ECI) has been recommended to remove the India Makkal Munnetra Katchi (IMMK) from the list of Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs).
According to a release, as part of its efforts to cleanse the political system, the ECI has identified RUPPs that have not contested any general or by-elections to Parliament or State/Union Territory Legislative Assemblies since 2019, and whose whereabouts could not be traced. As a first step, the Commission has initiated the process of removing 345 such parties from its list.
Among them is the IMMK, a RUPP registered at Door No. 95, Kaveri Street, Bhavani Taluk, Erode District – 638 301. In its emergency executive and general body meeting held on August 7, 2022, the party resolved to voluntarily delist itself from the register of unrecognized political parties. Accordingly, a letter requesting its removal was sent to the Election Commission on August 29, 2022.
In light of the ECI’s recent directions and the party’s own decision, it has now been recommended that the IMMK be removed from the list of RUPPs, the release added.
