A jeweller was shot dead and another person injured during a daring armed robbery at a jewellery showroom in Gujarat’s Surat city late on Monday (July 7, 2025) night, police said.
According to police, four armed men stormed into Shrinathji Jewellers in the city’s Sachin area around 8.30 p.m. and opened fire while looting valuables. When showroom owner Ashish Rajpara tried to intervene, the robbers shot him twice in the chest. Rajpara succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to a hospital.
“As the robbers attempted to flee, locals gave chase. The assailants fired at them, injuring one person, Nazim Shaikh, who sustained a bullet wound to his leg,” police said.
While three of the robbers managed to escape, one was caught by residents after a brief chase. The accused was reportedly beaten by a mob before being handed over to the police. He is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
In a bid to escape the angry crowd, the fleeing robbers abandoned a bag containing looted jewellery near the showroom. “Locals recovered the bag and returned it to the jeweller’s family,” the officers said, adding that it remains unclear whether the gang was carrying more than one bag.
Police have formed multiple teams to apprehend the remaining suspects. The case has sparked fresh concerns about security in the city’s commercial zones.
