The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC), in a bid to strengthen electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, plans to set up 31 public EV charging stations at its premises across the State.

The initiative aligns with both Central and State government efforts to promote EV adoption and reduce vehicular emissions. While the Department of Heavy Industries has already sanctioned over 2,800 charging stations in several cities, Telangana’s Electric Vehicle Policy 2024 further reinforces this push.

According to a TGSRTC document, the proposed charging stations will be located at bus depots, regional workshops, and stations in areas including Hakimpet, Shamirpet, Korutla, Godavarikhani, Toopran, Balkonda, Suryapet, Nagarjunasagar, Jadcherla, and depots in Narayanpet and Nagarkurnool, among others.

TGSRTC intends to partner with Charge Point Operators (CPOs), who will be responsible for installing the charging stations as per the corporation’s specifications, as well as managing and maintaining them under a revenue-sharing model.

The proposed contract period for CPOs is 10 years, with a provision for extension. To ensure the facilities remain functional and accessible to the public, TGSRTC has outlined several operational conditions. Revenue generated from these stations will be shared between the transport juggernaut and the selected contractors/ partners.

TGSRTC’s push to strengthen the EV charging ecosystem comes amid a significant rise in the number of electric vehicles on Telangana roads. According to the office of Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, 49,633 EVs were sold in the State between November 2024 and June 2025. Of these, 91 were electric buses, while two-wheelers made up the majority with 37,305 units sold. During the same period, just under 10,000 four-wheelers were also registered.

In addition, the number of electric autorickshaws on city roads is set to grow, with the department having approved permits for 20,000 new electric autos. Permits for another 25,000 retrofitted electric autorickshaws have also been cleared.
