A sea of red flags swept through Hyderabad’s central streets on Wednesday (July 9) as more than 1,000 members of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Trade Union Centre of India (TUCI), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC) and others held a protest rally against central government’s alleged anti-labour policies. The rally was part of a 24-hour nationwide general strike called by ten central trade unions.

The procession began at Baghlingampally, with union workers, daily wage labourers and activists raising slogans demanding the enforcement of standard Labour Acts and stronger safeguards for workers’ rights. Participants were seen travelling in pairs on two-wheelers with flags fluttering from their handlebars as they passed through the arterial roads of Chikkadpally.

Chikkadpally ACP L. Ramesh, overseeing the security arrangements, said that the rally was held with police permission and concluded without any incident. “The entire rally was peaceful. The crowd has now reached Indira Park. Officers from both Gandhinagar and Chikkadpally stations were deployed throughout the route to manage the procession, and the Domalguda police further took over,” he said.
