A 30-year-old mason, M. Vinoth Kumar of Samayanallur was hacked to death by an unidentified armed gang at Samayanallur on Wednesday night.
The police said that the deceased was returning home after work on foot when the gang, which came by a car, waylaid him and attacked him with sharp weapons.
After making him immobile by inflicting cut injury on his leg, the gang then mutilated his head with repeated attacks and killed him before fleeing the scene.
The police said that Vinoth was an accused in a murder case reported in Alanganallur police station limits in 2022 and suspect that the murder could be a revenge.
Samayanallur police are investigating.
