Residents of Avadi Corporation have urged the local body to speed up work to construct the underground sewer lines in areas including Charles Nagar, Babu Nagar and Gandhi Nagar.

Roy Rozario, a resident, said that the pace of construction was very slow. “Two weeks ago an earth mover was used by the contractor to dig up a few streets. These are all cement concrete roads and have been dug up to place pre-cast chambers. On my street, they dug two holes and left the third chamber on the road saying that it will be done on another day. The sewer lines are coming after a long wait since the project was split into two phases. We don’t want to wait much longer,” he said.

Johnson, another resident, said that after the roads were dug up, the excavated earth was left on the streets. “It’s about a foot deep and we are unable to take out our vehicles or even step out to go to the nearby shop. If it rains, it is even worse as the earth gets slushy and most of us are senior citizens making it difficult to walk on such road.”

“In the first stage of laying sewer lines, the earth was removed immediately. But now the contractor seems to be short staffed. In some places the compound walls have been damaged due to the work,” he said. .

Minister for Minorities Welfare S. M. Nasar said that the works will speed up.
